Cyprus ship is sinking near Pandura
A Cyprus ship anchored in the Panadura Sea, that was anchored off the coast of Panadura for a long period(3 years) of time has sunk.Director of Merchant Shipping Ajith Seniviratne said that the ship had sunk three nautical miles off the coast of Panadura.The ship which had been flying the Cyprus flag had been impounded in 2007 by the Commercial High Court over a cargo issue.
The Director of Merchant Shipping added that 207 tonnes of oil had been removed from the ship to prevent harm to the environment.However, he noted that there is around 10-20 tons of fuel at the bottom of the vessel, which cannot be removed.Director of Coast Conservation, S.R. Samaratunge said that steps have been taken to mitigate any damage that may be caused by the leakage of oil stored in the ship.
